away. They peeked at him when they thought he wasn’t looking, but August saw. I think he almost always saw. He heard too. I think he was used to it though…. That doesn’t mean that he wasn’t burned by their words. That doesn’t mean he wasn’t hurt by their looks. He was just familiar with it. That’s all.
5. What does September’s precept, “When given the choice between being right or being kind, choose kind,” mean? This precept simply, yet notably means that you should choose kindness over knowing all the answers. For example, if you are in an argument with someone, and you know you are right, then what does it matter if the other person is wrong? They’ll most likely figure it out. Or, it could mean that if being kind could be closer to being right, than actually knowing the answer. At very least, it means that being kind can´t get you going in the wrong direction. 6. Why does August use a smile to compare himself and Summer to “Beauty and the Beast”? August sees himself as “ugly,” like the beast in a well-known fairy-tale, while he sees summer as a rather beautiful person, like the princess in this story. I think another reason for this comparison, is that, while august looks different on the outside, he has a very appealing personality on the inside. To put it short, inner beauty is what matters most. 7. Why is Halloween a positive thing for August? Some say, that a first impression of someone is the most important. I disagree. The first thing your brain notes about someone is the way that they look. People are very quick to judge. Even if you are very polite and a great person to be around, you judge, you just probably keep it to yourself. It may be only for a second, but it happens. It’s part of the human condition, everyone does it. That is why your first impression of someone is not the most important one, for you haven’t gotten to know them yet. So, when people first see August, they judge him because of how different he looks, but when it is halloween, he can be someone
else. No one knows who is under the costume. No one judges him. For one day, he doesn’t have to worry about the looks he gets from the people who haven’t taken the time to get to know him. Do you get my point? 8. What were Jack and Julian talking about? Jack and Julian were talking about Auggie. They were talking about how they thought he was ugly, and how Jack wasn’t really Auggie’s friend, he was only pretending. They just didn’t know that Auggie was hearing the entire conversation. Part Two - Via 9. Do you think Via is jealous of all the attention August gets? I would agree that Via is jealous of all the attention August gets….. but I also think that she has the right to be. Auggie does get a lot of attention, and Via, well, she's expected to just be patient and wait. Well, Via’s done quite a bit of waiting, and yet, everyone still expects her to be understanding and forgiving. Isn't that something that might make you a touch jealous. 10. Did Via have a good first day of highschool.
