This preview shows page 8 - 10 out of 14 pages.

job, duel to gain alyosha’s soul, lead to the grand inquisitor which is an attack on god’s son -justice of the universe (why is there evil?) “why is such a man alive”, the little demon in dmitri’s dream, suffering of the children - -grand inquisitor -with freedom comes insecurity you will make moral mistakes and you will feel guilty for it, you will have regret, you will wish you weren’t so stupid, and there will be no one to blame but yourself -creates anxiety before choice and guilt and regret after -you wish there was a way to make sure decisions were certain ie a computer algorithm that made choices for you so you knew it was the choice that would make you happiest -certainty is important because it erases all doubt soviet union tried this with communism and it was an utter failure -inquisitor represents the best possible communist though, the communist ideal, he genuinely cares for human beings and wants to relieve their suffering, so he wants to take away their freedom -true freedom based on the ideals of communism, the consciousness of necessity, the ability to choose what you have to choose -people tell themselves they have true freedom when they’re giving it up -jesus represents the exact opposite, having free choice means you are going to make mistakes, but that’s the only way your life can be your own, the only way you can strive to achieve something and achieve it, to sacrifice something you care about it to help somebody else, you are the product of all the choices you have made, each choice makes you a slightly different person. Your choices make you you. Damn that’s deep -“man does not live by bread (material things) alone” “they would not want to live without the sense that their lives are meaningful” they have to devote themselves to something other than material things P. 281 “this is what is rejected in the sake of that freedom” “choosing bread…” bread satisfies spiritual needs
-why does everyone want to convert everyone else to their ideology? As long as there are people who believe something else, something tells you you might be wrong. What you are basing your life on could be wrong. You have to convert everyone so you can live with certainty -you are tolerant about things you don’t care about (ie relgion vs. social issues for young people) -what does nobody doubt? Sheer material power, you can’t doubt pain -so if you’re offered bread you take it because you can eat it and worship it? P. 292 “without a stable…” -inquisitor says there are 3 powers – miracle, mystery, and authority -you are in a high tower, if you are the son of god cast thyself down and a miracle will take place -inquisitor says if you perform miracles, there would be no room left over for faith -if you believe in something because of miracles, you are not a chrisitan, you are just worshipping power -if you do the moral thing just to get into heaven, that’s not faith or goodness, that’s just good investment -if you believe without reason you are not a Christian
