Discuss perspectives on gender and the idea that these
differences we see between men and women (these are
biological differences and them in their natural roles
Feminist view points and how gender organization of families
kind of leave women to get the shaft
Masculine perspectives – gender norms within families can be
harmful for men too
Gender socialization – boy v girl, how our parents, siblings,
peers and teachers at school help with this
Segregation in the work place – women and men are
segregated into certain types of jobs (nurse more feminine and
more masculine jobs being an engineer) and Women’s dollar
versus than the man
Sexuality and the stigma of homosexuality keeping people from
coming out, stigma for anything that deviates from dichotomy
(either straight or gay, extra stigma for those who identify with
others than these two)

Ch 8 – Trends in marriage
Decline in marriage – change in culture, value, symbolic
achievement that is increasingly unattainable
If you’re rich you don’t need to marry and if you’re poor you
don’t have the money (economic can affect the decline in
marriage)
Racial ethnic differences
As marriage has declined cohabitation has increased
Marriage in the highly educated
Cohabitation increased for all education groups, tend to be
short lived (3 years majority end)
Reasons people cohabit – varied the more people cohabit
because it becomes less select (three broad reasons: people
who cohabit before marriage or trial marriage, alternative to
marriage or instead of marriage, and cohabit after marriage)
