What does it cost us? o Silvia Hewlett (2002) – Creating a Life – interviewed women who were working in large Fortune 500 companies; looking for managerial role Many of these women at the high levels of management don’t have children o Can women really have it all ? Women are going to college longer than before, moving into marketplace, making headway, o Also have a family? 42% of women over age of 40 were childless yet only 14% of them were childless by choice argue that women who come out of 2 nd wave of feminism may not fully understand the consequences of a reproductive lifespan; there are constraints on repro biology Most men in high up positions do in fact have families So men can have BOTH! o miscarriage rates go up as you get older, most take place early in the pregnancy (by 7 th or 8 th wk, first trimester) age miscarriage rate 20 9 35 16 40 36 45 (eggs not as viable) 75 age of the eggs is important, not the amt of eggs baby girl is conceived with ALL eggs inside men are making sperm all the time Young college aged womens’ eggs are sought after o Ads are seen posted on this campus too – outside of Javits o Egg donors paid $5k – 8k per cycle o East Asian culture – paid more (up to ~$15k) since there are few of them o Younger womens’ eggs are healthier, not so connected with the idea of getting pregnant (since they are most likely trying to do everything to avoid getting pregnant), they need $$ Egg donors are diff than surrogates There is a VERY LARGE need for egg donors; so much so that there are egg “agents” or “recruiters” o Business of reproductive medicine Infertility = for men and women, can be treated, not always only a woman’s issue Ashley Johnson SOC 340 Notes April 19, 2017 First Half of Class Final Exam: Tuesday May 16th, 5:30 PM in Javits 100

Two physicians (Mr and Mrs Jones) created the first IVF clinic, in VA, and taught other physicians. Worked with Johns Hopkins on first sex change surgeries. Dr. Jones found that he thought he was giving people hope, did not expect the protests that came from the Pro-Life movement, he died very recently. Childlessness Reading by Susan Lang: what it is like to be someone who is childless. There is childlessness by choice and not by choice. Biology, illness, lack of funding, not meeting someone you want to parent with, are problems that may arise When you are not childless by choice, feel dislocation from rest of society because it is expected that you are going to have a child, and you expect medicine to help you.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
