Satisfaction • “The work given to young associates is interesting, and we have a good work culture where there’s lots of interaction with kind and helpful partners.” • “Great firm, but the work is cyclical and it can get difficult to meet budgeted hours.” • “The substantive opportunities on the white collar team are great.” Firm Culture • “Everyone is very collegial and respectful. Groups will have happy hours, both planned and impromptu. Associate classes also have social events. Mentors continuously check to make sure that everything is going well. Older associates and partners are genuinely interested in making sure that you’re doing good work and in helping you do good work.”

555 Vault Guide to the Top 100 Law Firms, 2018 Edition STEPTOE & JOHNSON LLP • “Lawyers make a real effort to organize group outings including informal Whiskey Fridays (happy hours) among junior associates.” • “Some people get together regularly for happy hour and other events, while others are less social; either is perfectly acceptable here.” • “Firm gatherings aren’t as frequent as I would have expected.” Associate/Partner Relations • “Partners treat associates with respect and value their input; there are no yellers. The firm could be more transparent in explaining its finances and the partner track, although the firm has made an extra effort recently to provide half- year and year-end assessments more quickly than in years past.” • “Partners are genuinely interested in getting you work and in improving the quality of the work that you do.” • “Firm is becoming more transparent regarding advancement and bonus. Associates are treated well and respectfully by partners with respect to inter personal relations. There isn’t really a commitment to making sure associates stay busy. For finances, associates only know what’s in the press.” • “The partners overall are quite pleasant and work well with associates. There is also a lot of partner interaction with young associates.” Hours • “The firm values work-life balance. I very rarely get unreasonable deadlines. While some late-nights and weekend work is unavoidable, the burden is significantly more reasonable than that at other firms.” • “Face-time is totally unimportant. The halls are empty after 7 and many people go home starting at 6. People try to hit their hours target, but are not expected to work considerably beyond that.” • “Face-time is not required, but there is an informal expectation that you will be able to respond to emails and work between 8am-8pm Monday through Friday. At present, it has been hard to take any vacation; if something needs to get done, I’ll get an email regardless of what I previously told my superiors about my availability.” • “50 hours of business development and 100 hours of pro bono per year count toward the billable requirement.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
