inland), have a higher F-U value, and therefore a darker F-U color. Brown is high on the F-U scale, and since brown water is associated with terrestrial CDOM, the sites inland have higher CDOM content. These sites, such as 04 and 03, are near the river system.

5. The depth to which UV light at 320 nm penetrates into the water column has been used to estimate the depth to which organisms (especially larvae) might suffer DNA damage by sunlight. CDOM is the primary absorber of UV at 320 nm. Does the Newport River show any evidence that it has a natural “sunscreen” which may mitigate this effect? Explain using the marine optical data you collected. Figure 1. Comparing EdZ320 values to depth across site 07 Figure 2. Comparing EdZ320 values to depth across site 04 At site 04, which is the Newport river location, our calculated z 10 value was .235. At site number 07, which was the very farthest point of Onslow Bay, we calculated the Z10 value to be 1.36. (Shown in the figures above). This shows that there is a significant difference between the attenuation between different locations. You want as low a z value as possible, because this means there is more light that is attenuated, or scattered throughout the water column. This means that less direct light is hitting larval organisms. Since CDOM levels are higher and the z 10 value is lower at the Newport river site, this does suggest that it has a natural “sunscreen” to help mitigate the effects of harmful light.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
