yet been addressed or resolved. At the end of Reconstruction, there were still farms in the South that depended on the labor of black slaves to grow certain crops, such as cotton and tobacco. As America expanded westward, northern opposition to slavery in the new western territories led Southerners to fear for their economy, as the very existence of slavery is what fed the economy in the South. The Southerners and Northerners fought on this and this is what led to the Civil War, and ultimately the making of a finished nation. ( History.com Staff. (2009)). Emancipation Proclamation, which “freed all slaves in the rebellious states after January 1, 1863.” ( History.com Staff. (2009)). This was a big step in completing the American Revolution and honoring the Declaration of Independence, finally living up to the statement “all men are created equal”.
