What is the role of the judiciary and what powers does it hold? The judicial court has the authority to declare an act, a law, or a bill unconstitutional. What are the major areas of cleavage in the state (ethnic, racial, class, gender, religious, regional)? The major areas of cleavage in Mexico are the socioeconomic standings of the people and post-colonial racial distinction. What comprises the civil society of the state? The civil society of Mexico is comprised of a close relationship between the individuals of the government and the citizens. Is the media state controlled or free press? The media is free press. How do citizens participate politically? Citizens participate in general elections, referenda, and join interest groups to voice their needs and desires. What are the major social movements that can be seen in the history of the state? A major social movement was the agricultural reform. Another major social movement is the educational reform and economic reform to eliminate Mexico’s debt. How do the people view citizenship? People view citizenship as something protected, and thus identify with Mexico as a whole state. What is the state’s history with revolution, coups and/or war? A timeline would be helpful.

Situation Components Promoting Factor Inhibiting Factors Consequences Díaz is overthrown After a long dictatorship, Mexican social leaders rose to overthrow Díaz. Díaz went against his own belief and held to his power for decades. Some forces were still loyal to Díaz. Political instability came as Mexico went through a series of leaders. Civil War Carranza is murdered A lot of people supported Carranza. When he decided to run again for presidency and was murdered, his support group rose.
