Kohlberg’s Moral Development 3universal ethical principles. Prior rights and social contracts is based on laws protecting the moral principles and human rights. Universal ethical principles believes that every person has worth and dignity that is equal to everyone else.Three Contributions Kohlberg made to our understanding of moral developmentThree contributions that Kohlberg contributed to our moral understanding are grouped into three different levels of morality; these groups are based on pre-conventional, conventional, and post-conventional morality. The first stage is the( Pre- conventional stage) this stage contains the obedience and punishment orientation and self- interest orientation; during this stage its difficult for children toconsider different points of viewwhen facing a moral delimmas. During this stage children tends to over look the intentions of people, but, they focus on fear of authority and avoiding punishment from behaving morally. For example if you let your wife die, you will be blamed for not spending the money to help her and there will be an investigation on you and the druggist for the death of your wife( Kohlberg, 1969, p.381). The ( Conventional stage) the instrumental purpose orientation; however this can be viewed as the interpersoanl accord and comformity and authority and social-order maintaining orientation. Children are aware that people have different in moral dilemmas but their understanding is concrete; children view right action as following from self-interest and understanding asan equal exchange of favors. For examplethe saying a favor for a favor if a child does something for her friend and shes expecting something in return the child is at the preconvential level. The finale stage(Post-Conventional) Social contract orientation and universal ethical principles; during this stage individuals take a large perspective of social laws into perspective, individuals moral choices are no longer depended on.
