We then heated the test tube and centrifuged the solution to separate the mixture once again. After that we added 20 drops of 3M KOH and another drop of thioacetanide. After we centrifuged it, we added 6M HCl to the filtrate and 5 drops of thioacetanide. After that, we tested the discarded liquid in order to get some residue using some hot water. If the mixture was colorless with the addition of Hot H2O then there was lead present if it was white there were other various Cations. After that, we then tested the white substance with ammonia in order to finally separate the rest of the Cations. If there was a white precipitate then there could possibly be Bismuth or copper present. The last step involved more ammonia to totally precipitate and separate the Bismuth ion present. Discussion: We were able to obtain very visible results and were able to obtain reliable results also. However, there may have been some error from the result of experimental errors. For example, we may have possibly contaminated the different chemicals by using the same test tubes. This would’ve yielded different results and would’ve hampered us from obtaining reliable results. Another possible error that could’ve occurred may have been using too much of a chemical when trying to obtain a precipitate.
