Disney incorporated these customs and even ruptured the typical gender roles when Mulan entered the army. I can relate to Mulan’s expectations about marriageability and desiring honor for my family. Where my family is from, Cambodia, society expects daughters to learn to become a housewife. That was considered honorable, and like many girls, and myself we want to honor our families. However like Mulan, I could not completely fulfill this role yet. I am not surprised that Mulan also carries other family values that are similar to mine, such as function of religion and importance of ancestors. Mulan and I are of similar backgrounds. Moreover, I am really intrigued that I am able to apply these sociological theories the film Mulan , for I never really analyzed a Disney movie this far. In Disney’s 1998 animated film Mulan, the idea of family can be explored using the theories of symbolic interactionism and feminism. Mulan’s family undoubtedly has respect for one another, and aim in functioning properly within the Chinese society. Each member of the family carries out their traditional roles of mother, father, grandmother etc., whilst Mulan rebels and defies the portrait of a traditional daughter. The family is also very active in one another’s lives. The spirits of the ancestors even watch over Mulan throughout her voyage to the army. Symbolic interactionism does completely explain the level of activeness that each family member has and also intertwines with the feminist theory. Where as with feminism, traditional gender roles and distinction of power is also portrayed through family. Moreover, the desire for honor and respect drive the family and society as a whole to maintain certain appearances to function. Whether gender roles are given, or what the family incorporates into their daily life, all action is done to mainly attain honor and respect, along with some value of comfort between families.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
