perience in order to analyze reality. If we did not understand the concept of time, memories would pass through our mind and you wouldn't be able to grasp that they are memories. We also must understand space in order to perceive the world in a 3-dimensional way, and the same idea goes for numbers. What makes the number 5 equal 5 and not some random idea such as an or- ange? Numbers don’t exist anywhere and yet we understand their meaning. We could not have gotten these concepts through experience arriving at the conclusion of them being innate. In the 3rd Meditations, Descartes continues this argument by concluding the existence of God by connecting the way we make decisions based on some standard. (God) We innately un- derstand the idea of some “greater mind” that we did not gain through experience. His argument according to James Anderson and the University of San Diego goes, “every idea must be caused, and the cause must be as real as the idea. If I have any idea of which I cannot be the cause, then something besides me must exist.” (Anderson) The idea of God, as infinite and a “perfect being, could not have originated from within me”, since I am imperfect. (Anderson) And yet, I have an idea of God, so it could have only been caused by God, therefore God exists.
