AHIMA’S and AAPC’S standard of ethics are similar in the aspect of upholding the privacy and
confidentiality of data in the electronic health record (EHR). Both organizations state that a
professional should portray a professional manner to maintain a higher standard for that
profession. Another standard that they share is continuing education, which allows for the latest
laws, regulations, and practices to be kept up to date. Behavior is also listed and states to conduct
oneself in a professional and ethical way to avoid conflicts and demonstrate good judgement. By
not maintaining the values and ethics of professional conduct, goes against the code of ethics.
The difference between the two organizations mainly fall on the AHIMA’s side of ethics, which
is more specific to coding professionals. The AAPC code of ethics has a more general guidelines
for professionals. In AHIMA’s code of ethics, coding only what is documented in the EHR is a
