Rules for Nomenclature Names that designate a genus or higher level of classification can only be used once Ex. Wild lettuce (Genus Lactuca ), Canada goose ( Genus Branta ), beaver ( Genus Castor ), and the river otter (Genus Lutra ) all share the specific name canadensis . So, this name must consist of both a genus and specific name to have any meaning to a scientist When writing a binomial the genus is always capitalized, the specific name is always lower case, and both terms are italicized or underlined
