Chapter 7: “Significant Change” Theme: Power Symbol: Body bulges and sags (Joe’s power) Quotation Explanation “Naw, Ah ain’t no young gal no mo’ but den Ah ain’t no old woman neither. Ah reckon Ah looks mah age too. But Ah’m uh woman every inch of me, and Ah know it. Dat’s uh whole lot more’n you kin say. You big-bellies round here and put out a lot of brag, but ‘tain’t nothin’ to it but yo’ big voice . Humph! Talkin’ ‘bout me lookin’ old! When you pull down yo’ britches, you look lak de change uh life .” (79). I chose this quote because it demonstrates one of the first times that Janie is learning to become more independent and is beginning to stand up for herself. The quote also shows how Joe power is beginning to vanish and he’s losing control of Janie now that he has begun to change physically. Janie stands up for herself talking back to Jody saying he’s the one getting and she also tries to ruin his reputation by saying it in front of the men on the porch and people in store. It connects to the symbol because Joe’s body bulges and sags represent his lose of power because he is looking older and weaker causing Janie to become more independent. Chapter 8: “Old Ending, New Beginning” Theme: Identity/ Independence Symbol: Kerchief/ Hair rag (Janie’s Independence) Quotation Explanation “Years ago, she had told her girl self to wait for her in the looking glass . It had been a longtime since she had remembered. Perhaps she’d better look. She went over to the dresser and looked hard at her skin and features . The young girl was gone, but a handsome woman had taken her place. She tore off the kerchief from her head and let down her plentiful hair. The weight , the length , the glory was there. She took careful stock of herself, then combed her hair and tied it back up again.” (87) I chose this quote because Jody has just died while in an argument with Janie. They began arguing because Janie pities him since he is dying. After his death Janie looks into the mirror to see how she has grown and notices that although she has aged, she is still beautiful. While doing so she decides to take off her kerchief and let her hair free. It connects tot the symbol because Jody had ordered Janie to wear the kerchief but now that he is dead she is able to take it off and gains more independence.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
