the correct punishment was handed down. As the CNN article goes on to report, the decision to suspend and rescind the suspension and terminate Rice’s contract happened more than once (CNN, 2014). In this way, the hierarchy and punishment given to Rice was handed by the proper authority, but the situation was not handled adequately knowing how public it was at the time.
Barbour, Costas, Foulke 7The give and take of the situation confused fans and did not adequately portray the commissioner’s authority or the ability of the NFL to handle a domestic violent scandal. However, that was not the end of the scandal and the NFL’s management of the scandal. After a lot of backlash from the lackadaisical punishment, “the Commissioner admitted that he ‘didn’t get it right,’ and shortly thereafter increased the presumptive penalty for domestic violence for a first-time offender to six-games” (Jones, 2014). As the bylaws state, the commissioner does have the authority to rescind punishments if he so feels they do not appropriately fit the violation. This is a prime example of the NFL as an open system. They are adapting to the situation as more news and data was released about the scandal and appropriately assigning a punishment. In this case, the negative entropy (chaos) was coming from fans and committee members who felt the situation was handled incorrectly. The commissioner took feedback from fans and other mass media outlets and reassessed the situation. However, it was not the only reassessment. After the video of Rice hitting his finance was released, Goodell suspended Rice indefinitely (Jones, 2014). Being open to change and being homeostasis (the ability to change) are key elements that show a positive action towards the scandal. This was not the end to the scandal, as many people continued to question the culture in the NFL and the occurrence of domestic violence. “Moreover, any failure on the part of the League to understand the level of violence was not due to Rice’s description of the event, but to the inadequacy of words to convey the seriousness of domestic 17 violence. That the League did not realize the severity of the conduct without a visual record also speaks to their admitted failure in the past to sanction this type of conduct more severely” (Jones, 2014). What role does the culture of the organization play in this scandal?WHAT IS THE NFL’S CULTURE?
Barbour, Costas, Foulke 8The Baltimore Ravens when originally approached with the Rice scandal did not use the best approach. The Ravens coach was on Rice’s side and protected him in statements and interviews with the media. Initially, this created uproar from the general public and from supporters of the team. Their decision or lack of a decision for that matter regarding Rice and his punishment created a situation where spectators of the NFL were unsure if he would even face serious charges for his actions. It took several weeks for the NFL to completely respond and begin to take action against Rice. This situation now negatively affects the team and the NFL overall. There will continue to be opinions and questions raised in regards to domestic violence
