10) What is the difference between collectivist and individualistic cultures and how might this affect one’s development? Which do we live in? (10) A collectivist prize social harmony, obedience, and close family connectedness over individual achievement. Individualistic Cultures prize independence, competition, and personal success. We live in an Individual Culture. 11) In our author’s framework, explain what she means by nature versus nurture? (12) Nature is the biological or genetic causes of development. Nurture is environmental causes of development. She is saying that the reason we have some of our personalities, talents, and traits is because of how we were natured/nurtured as we developed. 12) In terms of Nature vs. Nurture, is Behaviorism a Nature theory or Nurture theory? (12-13) John Watson stated that nurture-is-all-important position of traditional behaviorism. 13) What about Attachment Theory (nature or nurture)? (15-16) Attachment Theory is both nature and nurture because it is programmed into humans to promote survival and our early experiences with caregivers shape our adult ability to love.
