This assassination caused a widespread mourning across the nation and was a turning point in American history. Lincoln was a strong believer in remaining united as one nation and having a strong well governed country. According to McCrary (2015), a comparison between the moderate Republican regimes implemented by Lincolnwith the social and political system, and compares it with the reactionary government established in 1865 under the control of Andrew
Johnson and the Democratic Party. However, Andrew Johnson wasn’t too fond of the plan put forth by Lincoln’s Republic party especially those in regards to rights to freed slaves (Profiles of U.S. Presidents, 8/1/2017, p47) . President Johnson failed in his reconstruction plan. According to Swanson (2012), “Instead as weeks turned into months, Johnson failed to provide consistent and practical guidance to his appointees. This lack of steady direction, rather than the actual men selected for the posts, proved to be especially stunting to the Reconstruction process.”Andrew Johnson appointed seven governors who seemed to be capable and loyal but leadership from President Johnson was not there. There was one incident whereby Johnson had failed to rebut a direct challenge by one of his appointed governors. This showed the leadership shortcomings of Johnson during the Reconstruction process (Swanson, 2012, p.18). One comparison noted was "Like Lincoln, Johnson preferred to suggest rather than to impose conditions."
