Surname 2 Question 5 Most companies hire staff through word of mouth. The disadvantage with this recruitment method is that minorities may not receive news concerning available job positions since they may not have a network of friends in privileged positions. As a result, there are high chances that they will not apply for the vacancies. Question 6 Due to increased labor demands, minorities were brought in as people with the same skills as whites but willing to work in lower job positions and conditions. Hence, they were offered employment; however, with the emergence of labor unions, they were able to secure more jobs in different positions. Question 7 Statistical discrimination refers to a situation where employers rely on a certain method of recruitment that relies on a person’s characteristics. Equally, it relates to the application of group information to an individual. An employer would use statistical discrimination to determine whether it is worth hiring a given potential employee. Similarly, an employer would use rational judgment because it allows him or her to make statistically safe decisions. For example, when an applicant applies for a job that is designated for females and where research and data indicate that men do not perform well in the field, an employer may be forced to use statistical discrimination.
