Traits versus Behaviours What’s the problem with describing people (ourselves included) in terms of traits? Because the traits are inferred from behaviours we can make false attributions Traits don’t really provide much useful information about how a person will react in any particular situation Traits are only behavioural short-cuts; they come from our inferences about behaviours and can only be fully explained in terms of behaviours

Traits and Behaviours Why is it important for a behavioural therapist to be able to translate traits into behaviours? Because clients often use trait descriptions rather than behavioural description How do we do it? With the clients help, we identify the unique behaviours underlying client’s trait descriptions.

The ABC Model According to the behavioural model, what causes a person’s behaviour? Present events that occur before and after the behaviour has been performed What are maintaining conditions? The specific antecedents & consequences that cause an individual to perform an action or behaviour

Maintaining Conditions NOT ALL antecedents & consequences of a behaviour cause – or maintain – the behaviour Only a relatively small # influence or cause the behaviour and are referred to as maintaining antecedents and maintaining consequences.

Stimulus control (Prompts, setting events) Both can occur naturally or introduced intentionally to change a behaviour
