the system’s firewall being down at random times. If the breach was initiated at Flayton’s company, there is a strong implication it occurred during one of the down periods. The company could invest in additional or new software and training. The current staff may have the ability to implement the risk program but could use additional training to learn the most current processes and strategies. CIO Sergei was aware of their PCI system but was only able to accomplish 75%

Additional training or additional staff could assist with this issue and enable the company to meet all the PCI requirements, allowing for fewer data breaches in the future. Effective risk management is the key to implementing the best strategies for avoiding risk in your organization. Deciding what steps to take, what obstacles may affect the outcome, and how the organization plans to measure the process along the way is a formula that can be used in every successful risk management program. Unfortunately, in Flayton’s case, he and his management staff were in the mode of reacting versus being proactive. They were in the middle of a crisis in the business and trying to figure out a way to save the company’s reputation. Hopefully, after the damage control has been done, Flayton will realize some major changes need to take place to help prevent similar issues from occurring. If Flayton can collaborate with his staff to discuss the steps to implement their risk assessment plan, that will provide an outline on where to begin and how to consistently stay on top of not only what is occurring in the business, but what may be possible vulnerabilities that negatively affect the business. CEO Brett Flayton was desperately trying to resolve the data breach that occurred within his company. He and his team made possible assumptions that the breach could have occurred when one of the firewalls was down or that a former disgruntled employee may also be to blame. Brett was concerned about his customers’ personal information being shared and his company’s reputation was also on the line. If Brett and his management team can resolve the issue promptly, inform the customers that were affected, and salvage the company’s reputation, Flayton’s could come out of this crisis better because of it. Every aspect of the company is now being reviewed and all flaws and weak areas in the business are being exposed. Through this project, Brett is now faced with some major decisions. He must make some much-needed changes to his data security and possibly the physical security layout as well. He may be faced with the decision of firing current staff members, retraining current employees, hiring additional employees, or all the

The benefits the business will receive from this incident could outnumber the negatives once it all blows over. Flayton will have the proper tools necessary to handle and hopefully prevent any further data breaches. This will allow his company a more proactive approach versus reactive.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
