she was left with no choice but to marry another man who would “provide” for her and her children. On the contrary, Katerina was the one that had to provide for her children and herself. As time passes by, Katerina begins to have pity for herself like when she says: “…what a happy luxurious life we had in papa’s house and how this drunkard has brought me.” Her second husband treats her like trash and is ungrateful of her. He even sells her stockings so he can buy more beers and get drunk. However, Katerina takes on a whole different mindset and decides to thrive without the help of a man. Katerina’s attitude changes and becomes a woman of self- sacrifice when we see that: “…Katerina Ivanovna is at work from morning till night; she is scrubbing and cleaning and washing the children.” Instead of self- pitying herself, she becomes awoman of self- sacrifice in order to prosper for her family. The emphasis on these characters reinforces the overall theme that everyone has a split personality. In this novel we see that the changes in attitude and personality are triggered by need. Both Dounia and Katerina need to come out of their economic deficit so they took on a whole new character in order to better their situations.
