" Thomas Jefferson (1787) Who would agree with the above quote: Locke or Hobbes? Explain Jefferson’s statement that the “unalienable rights” of “all men [who] are created equal” is “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness” which derives from Locke’s belief that all men are created with natural rights. The only contradiction is “the pursuit of Happiness” versus “property” and in a sense they are the same thing because our property is what reflects what we have and what often brings pleasure into our lives although happiness can also derive from the people around us and the impact we make on our world. “The voice of the people has been said to be the voice of God...it is not true in fact. The people are turbulent and changing; they seldom judge or determine right. Give therefore to the first class (the rich) a distinct, permanent share in the government. They will check the unsteadiness of the second (people).” Alexander Hamilton (1787) Who would agree with the above quote: Locke or Hobbes? Explain Although Hamilton discusses the addition of the first class into the government, that is a very limited portion of society and the reasoning behind it is that people are “troubled and channing”. This is a statement that Hobbes would agree with more because it is greatly limiting the government to a solemn group and is on the path to describing people as internally wicked.
