Another issue you need to be aware of, is channel duplication. Channel Duplication 6:00-8:34 If you're using a 2.4 gigahertz wireless network. Then you need to be concerned with signal degradation caused by radio channel conflicts. Remember, wireless access point is configured to use a particular channel within a specified frequency range. By dividing the frequency range up into separate channels multiple devices can share the bandwidth without interfering with each other. But for this to work each device within range must be configured to use a different channel. For example, the channel used by your wireless access point cannot be used by any other wireless devices in range. The good news is, if you're using a 5.8 gigahertz wireless network, this is less of a problem because this frequency range is divided up into many more channels. Making it relatively easy for each deviceto use a unique channel. Most 5.8 gigahertz equipment in fact, is configured by default to automatically scan for and then select an unused channel in this frequency range when they're initially powered on.

Here's the bad news though. Older 2.4 gigahertz wireless networks are much more susceptible to channel interference. In fact in the 2.4 gigahertz range, there are only eleven wireless channels available. Which sounds like a lot, but they're actually not. That's because adjacent channels in the 2.4 gigahertz range actually overlap with each other. Now as a result of this overlap, there are really only three non-overlapping channels within this frequency range. These are channels one, six, and eleven. Because of this channel overlap, it makes it really difficult to find an unused 2.4 gigahertz channel for wireless access points to use. And this is really true if multiple 2.4 gigahertz wireless access points are within range of each other. In this situation it's commonly experienced in crowded environments like office suites, business parks, dormitories, and apartment complexes. This issue is aggravated by the fact that many consumer products also make use of the same frequency range like cordless phones. They also need to use one of these wireless channels. Now, what do you do? Well, you can use wireless survey tools to actually scan the radio frequency environment to see what frequencies and channels are already in use. And this allows you to identify an unused channel that your wireless network can be configured to use. Now, if the 2.4 gigahertz frequency range is fully utilized in your environment and there are no unused channels available, really what you need to do is consider upgrading to 5.8 gigahertz wireless equipment. EMI 8:35-9:08 With this in mind let's talk about EMI. Now, poor connectivity could also be caused by electromagnetic interference. Many types of equipment in the work environment can generate enough EMI to disruptyour wireless network radio signals. Some examples include electric motors, electronic equipment, microwave ovens, power tools and overhead power lines.
