January 2017 Good Giganews Fenwick secured a landmark victory for its clients Giganews and Livewire Services in the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in a case brought by notorious copyright plaintiff Perfect 10. The court’s opinion consolidated important principles of copyright law which will shape the landscape for online service providers for years to come. Repeat copyright plaintiff Perfect 10, Inc. sued Giganews for billions of dollars over alleged copyright infringements on its Usenet service. Before suing Giganews, Perfect 10 had sued many other leading Internet service providers. In earlier stages of the litigation, three separate federal judges in the trial court in Los Angeles made key rulings for Giganews, culminating in a complete victory for Giganews in the trial court in late 2014. The trial court also awarded Giganews over $5.6 million in attorney’s fees and costs against Perfect 10 in 2015. On January 23, 2017, the Court of Appeals, by a 3-0 decision, affirmed Giganews’ victory. GETTING HIRED Vault’s Verdict: Fenwick & West works with some of the most brilliant technical minds in the world and needs associates with technical backgrounds who are up to the challenge. Though school and grades have become more of a focus in recent years, and a friendly personality is also important. Hiring Process • “It’s an entrepreneurial place with entrepreneurial clients. The firm wants self-starters who take work and run with it. Fenwick recruits from top law schools outside California (Harvard, Columbia, NYU, U of Chicago, Northwestern) and a lot of law schools more locally (Berkeley, Stanford, UC Davis, UC Hastings, Santa Clara, UCLA). Berkeley and Stanford are usually the best represented in our summer classes.” • “Law school and grades are extremely important, and probably most important is going to a local law school (even if it isn’t top tier). The more gold stars on your resume, the better.” • “We tend to look for people with friendly and outgoing personalities. All of the other associates in my class are very smart, but what always strikes me is how nice all of them are. We tend to recruit from local schools (Stanford, Berkeley, Hastings, Davis, and Santa Clara) along with a handful of top-14 schools (Harvard, Chicago, Northwestern).” • “Berkeley, Stanford and Santa Clara are feeder school. There has been significant lateral hiring, especially in the past couple of years. Seems like half of all corporate associates began their careers at one of the top 5 NY firms.” Interview Questions • “The questions are general questions based on past work experience. The firm seems to often videoconference with candidates as many teams have people across offices.” • “We try to keep interviews relaxed and conversational. There are very few canned interview questions like ‘describe your ideal working environment.’” • “The firm wants those interested in technology and emerging companies.” • “The firm asks questions to rate the candidate’s profes- sionalism, communication skills, self-starter style, etc.”

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
