Alcohol is not good – you fall asleep quickly but quality is low, you don’t enter deep sleep for very long o Melatonin – works well to help you sleep, most people take too much though Sleep Disorders There are good behavior treatments for insomnia – regularity in which you try to sleep is important o Includes going to bed at the same time every night & waking up at the same time every morning Sleep paralysis – sense you are paralyzed, state of paralysis occurs in REM sleep o You mind is aware of the paralysis – associated w/ sense of falling, you can’t extend your arms or legs Sleep walking, sleep eating, sleep talking – you are in deep stage of sleep, most common in children o You should try to wake someone that you see sleep walking, sleep eating, and sleep talking Sleep eating is common side effect of sleep medication like Lunesta or Ambien o Medications are designed to keep you in deep sleep Everyone is dreaming, but you may not be aware of your dreams o REM sleep becomes more common after you’ve been asleep for longer o Dreams you are more likely to remember will be in dream cycles near the end of the night There are many different models of dreams in psychology

o (1) Freud’s Model of Dreaming – Royal Road to the Unconscious, Dream Interpretation Believed psychological problems resulted from people being unaware of repressing some dark, dangerous, and forbidden drives that they had Sexual and aggressive drives were so threatening that we have to repress them Believed we could get glimpse of these drives by analyzing content in dreams Ego that keeps these things controlled is off-guard when dreaming Idea was that your drives would be represented as symbols Common theme in Freudian psychoanalysis is phallic objects – things that represent genitals o (2) Activation Synthesis Model – idea that brain is just responding and firing randomly We try to make sense of dreams because as humans, we like to see meanings and patterns o (3) Memory Consolidation Model of Dreaming – idea that dreaming is necessary for us to remember our memories and to consolidate our memories Research has shown that sleep is necessary for reconsolidation of memories – dreaming per say isn’t necessary Lecture – Conditioning Psychology in the News Research suggests that the gifts we think that will be most liked often are not o Humans often really don’t enjoy the gifts that we are given Gift givers and gift receivers tend to focus on different things when they get a gift o Gift giver – focuses on occasion of gift giving, what it’ll be like when the person opens the gift o Gift receiver – focuses on the time that comes after the gift, what they’ll do with the gift o Ex – gift givers prefer giving flowers in full bloom, gift receivers prefer flowers just starting to bloom Classical Conditioning Learning – any skill, knowledge, or behavior that you acquire through experience o
