order to form their care. Furthermore, the model also stipulates that proficient providers at stage 4 have
developed a good sense of their patient situation and have the capacity of prioritizing needs and
routinely predicting outcomes accurately. Finally, the providers at stage 5 are the expert providers who
have developed confidence due to their extensive experience and knowledge base and have the capacity
of quickly grasping complex patient situations (Liou & Cheng, 2014, p. 57).
The process of transitioning from a novice to an expert usually takes time, hence patience,
commitment and dedicated are fundamental for a successful transition (Liou & Cheng, 2014, p. 57).
Based on this permeable, I will then conduct my personal assessment that is comprehensive,
affirmative and honest in order to ensure that I conclusively engage of the identifying my strengths and

weaknesses prior to the APN role transitioning. As a result, the Benner’s Novice to Expert Model
presented in the table below will be used as a guideline of my self-assessment prior to transitioning to
the APN role.
