Max Weber is another early sociologist who was one of the first to hold professorships in sociology. He disagreed with economics being the central force in social change (Henslin, 8). He believed that religion was responsible for this instead. Weber believed that the Roman Catholic belief system and Protestant belief system brought about the birth of capitalism. Protestants thought that financial success was a sign that God was pleased with them. As a result, they lived frugal and saved their money. This money grew and was invested, thus bringing about the beginning of capitalism. Roman catholics on the other hand, were taught that they were saved simply by being a member of the catholic church. One of Weber’s students holds a place in history as the first African American male to earn a doctorate at Harvard. W.E.B.
