Valence electrons can be found on the outer most principle shell of an element and are important due to their involvement in chemical bonding. You can find the valence electrons for an element by writing an electron configuration. For example: Sr You can write a full configuration, or you can abbreviate the configuration by using a noble gas, noted in brackets beside your configuration. [Kr] 5s^2 The valence electrons for this element is a total of 2. You can also determine this by looking to the periodic table and establishing which group the element is in; 2A.
