Amendment was passed because the state of Louisiana won the case of sending Plessy to the back of the bus because he was black, in order to protect the citizens of that state. Douglass also addresses the Three-Fifths Clause of Article 1, Section 2, and examines the idea of slave trading and owning. He reminds us, the readers, that the South did in fact want to count the slaves as a full person but over a compromise of representation and taxation, they had to be counted as 3/5 th of a person. Douglass states that we have to see it for what it was, a mere compromise. This did not encourage slave power in the congress and because of this clause; it should not make Congress look like they supported slavery whatsoever. I found this part of the article off-putting because whether Congress actually supported slavery or not, according to me wrong is just simply wrong. What would they have told slaves at the time? That this is just a compromise so deal with it? As a former slave himself, I was incredibly surprised by his arguments in his speech. What I would agree with is that we often over interpret some things. Douglass was right about seeing things for what they are instead of analyzing everything down to the last detail.
