Sam is Patrick’s stepsister. Charlie develops a crush on Sam, which he admits to her. As they grow closer, Sam reveals that she was sexually abused as a child. Later in the story, Sam kisses Charlie, to ensure thathis first kiss is from someone that truly loves him, but their romantic relationship does not progressive further at that time. Charlie begins tohang out with Patrick and Sam’s group of friends and starts to experiment with drugs and alcohol. Throughout the entirety of the story, Charlie has on and off flashbacks of his Aunt Helen, who died in a car crash while she was on her way to buy a birthday gift for him.In parallel, the story also includes Charlie’s sister’s relationship.Charlie witnesses Candice’s (his sister) boyfriend hit her, but she forbids him from telling their parents. Charlie, however, does tell his teacher about the incident, who tells their parents. The relationship between Charlie and Candice becomes strained and she continues to see her boyfriend despite what her parents want. Charlie later finds outhis sister is pregnant and secretly brings her to an abortion clinic. Afterwards, Candice breaks up with her boyfriend, and Charlie and Candice grow closer again.Similarly, Brad’s abusive father finds out about Patrick and Brad’s relationship causing Brad to act cruelly towards Patrick. This causes them to get into a physical fight, where Charlie breaks it up. Soon after, Patrick kisses Charlie and then apologizes, bur Charlie is able to realize it was only because he had just broken up with Brad.

The school year is coming to an end, and Charlie worries about losing his friends who are graduating from high school. Sam is leaving even earlie to attend a college prep program. As Charlie is helping her pack, he talks about his feelings for her. She admits that her should have acted on his feelings, and they begin to engage sexually, but Charlie quickly becomes uncomfortable and has to stop Sam. His sexual encounter with Sam brings back a flashback of his Aunt Helen, where he remembers that he was molested as a child.The story ends with Charlie being admitted to a mental hospitalwhere the reader fully discovers that Charlie was sexually abused as a child and that he has repressed those memories due to his love for his aunt. After a couple of months, Charlie is released from the hospital and visited by Sam and Patrick. This is where Charlie’s letter writing ends.The Perks of Being a Wallflower is an amazing story that addresses many important themes relating to adolescence, such as sexuality, friendship, and drugs and alcohol. Each character develops fully, and teaches an important lesson.Despite being a successful novel, The Perks of Being a Wallflowerwas banned in some schools for it’s content dealing with sex, drugs, and alcohol. People claimed it was “inappropriate” for school. In 2012, the book was made into a successful movie, which then put the book on the New York Times Best Seller List, but even the movie left out certain parts-such as Candice’s abortion. The novel features real themes and real characters and has many important lessons to teach students about growing up.
