(Friedel, 2012) Causes Many experts agree that there is not one cause of borderline personality disorder (Borderline personality disorder- causes, 2012). Scientists agree that that genetic, environmental,and traumatic factors contribute to the cause of borderline personality disorder (Borderline personality disorder, n.d.). Research studies now suggest that 60% of the risk of developing borderline personality disorder if by genetic abnormalities (Friedel, 2012). The genes we inherit from our parents make us more vulnerable to developing this mental illness (Borderline personality disorder- causes, 2012). Studies done on twins was borderline personality disorder strongly suggests that this illness is indeed inherited (Borderline personality disorder, n.d.) One study, found that if one identical twin had this illness, there was a two-in-three chance of the other twin also having the disorder (Borderline personality disorder- causes, 2012). Another study showed that a person can inherit his or her temperament and specific personality traits, specifically aggression and impulsiveness. Scientists are now studying genes that control emotion and impulses for possible links to this disorder. (Borderline personality disorder, n.d.)
