the early 1900’s was seen as an issue by many and laws such as The Emergency Immigration Act of 1921, which only allowed 2% of the current inhabitants of one region to immigrate to America, were passed to control the influx of certain people. Source 6: The Immigration chart showing the effects of the 1921 and 1924 immigration restriction laws, shows the drastic decline immigration took once the new law was enacted. The racism that so characterized America throughout history warped into a new monster in the 1920’s when the country took to battle with what was seen as the Immigration problem. The passing of the 19 th Amendment allowing women the right to vote created a new platform in time that women had never had, the constitutional right to express their beliefs at the level of politics and government in the country which they occupied. Women were therefore allowed a new freedom, and simultaneously the American advertisement industry took hold. As if in direct response to the newfound abilities of women, the rush of American advertisement and consumerism boomed. Seen here is an image of a 1929 Cosmetics Ad, Source 16, explaining to women that what hairstyle they choose to don will convey certain things about their personality and beliefs to the men they long to attract. The effectiveness of such advertisements and the distances they were able to cover is made perfectly clear with the image of this Girls’ Basketball Team in rural Pennsylvania from 1927 in Source 1.
