Abstraction Abstraction : The process of generalization by reducing the information content of a concept or an observable phenomenon, typically in order to retain only information which is relevant for a particular purpose. • Abstraction hides the complexity inside a module, simplifying the reuse of the module. • Abstraction enables designers of a system to think at a higher level. It masks complexity so that system designers don’t have to deal with a lot of messy details. When low-level complexity is hidden, system designers can focus on overall architecture and spend their time on producing better designs. • Reference: Raising the Level of Abstraction, by Willy Shih. 12
