Examine crucial references for the original and/or current work of the theorist and other authorswriting about the selected theory.Watson's Theories are congruent with other nursing scholars, Watson acknowledges caring as the essence of nursing. She also adds that caring can be viewed as the nurse’s moral ideal of preserving human dignity by assisting a person to find meaning in illness and suffering in order to restore or promote the person’s harmony. You may be inclined to view such “moral ideal” as being extremely intangible and inaccessible. However, as one usually aspires to be the best nurse possible, one tends to evaluate oneself to such ideal. Consequently, the nurse can experience frustrations if he/she feels incongruent with his/her own moral ideal. Instead, an ideal is a guide for shaping practice (Cara, 2003).
LIVING LEGEND THEORIST: JEAN WATSON4Identify the phenomenon of concern or problems addressed by the theory. The Watson’s nursing model states that nursing is concerned with promoting health, preventing illness, caring for the sick, and restoring health. It focuses on health promotion, as well as the treatment of diseases. Watson believed that holistichealth care is central to the practice of caring in nursing. She defines nursing as "a human science of persons and human health-illness experiences that are mediated by professional, personal, scientific, esthetic and ethical human transactions" (Nursing Theory, 2015). I felt strongly about this theory and definitely abide by it because I felt like patients deserved to be treated as individual. They are nota disease or another number; they are someone’s child or parents. Providing a caring environment will not only promote health, but also provides support to the patient mentally and emotionally. Achieving the concept of this theory will help a provider to promote health to a higher level of physical, mental, and social functioning. The practice of caring should be the central to all nursing levels and it begins with one nurse at a time. Explain whether the theory uses deductive, inductive or retroductive reasoning. Provide evidenceto support your conclusion.Deductive reasoning is observing a set of characteristics that may be reasoned from a convergence of physical and behavioral actions (Turvey, 2001). Jean Watson’s Philosophy developed Caring Model in1979 in an attempt to define the actions of nursing activity through humanistic aspects of life. Watson’s theory uses deductive reasoning by providing a framework for decision-making. Her grand theory provides an abstract structure from her Caring Model and proposes outcomes based on use and application of the model. Jean Watson’s theory suggests theconsideration of nursing as both a science and an art, and caring as a key factor in the human
