30. What is the significance and influence of satellites in facilitating the transfer of information around the globe? The impact of these communication systems has been sytraggering. In countries which highly developed telecommunication infrastructures, homes and offices now have multiple links to the outside world, including telephones digital satellite and television, electronic mail and the Internet. The Internet has emerged as the fastest-growing communication tool ever developed some – 140 millions people worldwide were using the Internet in the mid – 1998. In Tokyo and London for example – not only can hold a conversation in real time, but can also send documents and images to one another with the help of satellite technology. 31. Why the emergence of the knowledge society has been linked to the development of a broad base of consumers who are technologically literate and eagerly integrate new advances in computing, entertainment and telecommunications into their everyday lives? The very operation of the global economy reflects the changes that have occurred in the information age. Many aspects of the economy now work through networks that cross national boundaries, rather than stepping at them. In order to be competitive in globalizing conditions, business and corporations have restructured themselves to be more flexible and less hierarchical in nature. Production practices and organizational patterns have become more flexible, partnering arragenments with other firms have become commonplace and particicpation in worldwide distribution networks has become essential for doing business in rapidly changing global market. 32. triggering international financial crises such as the ones that spread from the Asian ‘tiger economies’ to Russia and beyond in 1998’. The ‘electronic economy’ is factor that underpins economic globalization. Banks, corporations, fund managers and individual inventors are able to shift funds internationally with the click of a mouse. As the global economy becomes increasingly intergrated, a financial collapse in one part of the world can have an enormous effect on distant economies. The political, economies, social and technological factors described above are joining together to produce a phenomenon that lacks any earlier parallel in terms of its intensity and scope. 33. Define the differences between international and regional mechanisms of government in the United Nations and the European Union. The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg is one of the six founding countries of the European Union , together with France, Germany, Belgium, Italy and the Netherlands. In 1957 these countries signed the Treaty of Rome which founded a European Economic Community. In the negotiations, the government managed to have the principle of legal equality accepted for all states, even the smallest, and obtained direct representation in the European Institutions.
