With the advancement of technology there is a transition from manually to semiautomatic to automatic lathes. These are high speed, heavy duty, mass production lathes in which all the job handling operations and all the processing operations are done automatically. Ex – Single spindle automatic, swiss type automatic lathe, etc. (iv) Crankshaft Lathe It carries all the attachments like taper turning, threading etc. It is mainly used for turning very long parts like Turbine, Crank shafts and Engine shafts etc. (v) Vertical Lathes

The lathe machine is used in metal working, wood turning, metal spinning, parts reclamation, thermal spraying and glass working. It can be used to shape pottery; the potter’s wheel is the latest well-known design made by lathe. If we have most suitably equipped metal lathe than it can be used to produce most solids of revolution, plane surfaces and screw threads or helices. Ornamental lathes can produce three-dimensional solids of incredible complexity. Examples of various objects that are produced by lathe are candlestick holders, gun barrels, cue sticks, table legs, bowls, baseball bats, musical instruments, crankshafts and camshafts. ……………………………………………………………………………………………………. Drilling Drilling is the operation of producing a cylindrical hole of required diameter and depth by removing metal by the rotating edge of a cutting tool called drill. Drilling is one of the simplest methods of producing a hole. Drilling does not produce an accurate hole in a workpiece. The internal surface of the hole generated by drilling becomes rough and the hole is always slightly oversize due to vibration of the spindle and the drill. A hole made by a drill of size 12mm will measure approximately up to 12.125mm and by a drill of size 22mm will measure up to 22.5mm.

Types of Drilling Machines 1. Portable drilling machine or Hand drilling machine 2. Sensitive drilling machine or Bench drilling machine 3. Upright drilling machine or Pillar drilling machine Portable Drilling Machine Portable drilling machine can be carried and used anywhere in the workshop. It is used for drilling holes on workpieces in any position, which is not possible in a standard drilling machine. These machines can accommodate drills from 12mm to 18 mm diameter.

Bench Drilling Machine It is designed for drilling small holes at high speeds in light jobs. High speed and hand feed are necessary for drilling small holes. The base of the machine is mounted either on a bench or on the floor by means of bolts and nuts. It can handle drills up to 15.5mm of diameter.
