periods. If hypothyroidism is left untreated symptoms will get worse. The late symptoms are slowed speech, swollen or “puffy” hands, feet and face; lower body temperature, and slowing of the persons heart rate. Other late symptoms include thinned eyebrows, thickened skin, hoarseness, and a decrease in taste and, or smell. There are two main type of testing that occurs, a physical exam and a blood test. The physical exam is the easiest way to check if the patients symptoms match those of hypothyroidism. The 22

HIT111 DISCUSSION QUESTIONS physical exam will be able to reveal if the patient has an enlarged or shrunken thyroid. The physical exam can show the doctor and the patient that there may be even more physical signs of hypothyroidism like brittle hair, abnormal reflexes, swelling of the limbs, and skin that is cool to the touch. The blood tests are used to confirm the findings in a physical exam. Blood tests are used to measure the patients TSH and T4 hormones from the thyroid. The doctor may also use a blood test to check the person’s levels of cholesterol, prolactin, sodium, cortisol, liver enzymes, and complete blood count. There are many different options of medications as a treatment plan, as well as thyroid replacement therapy, but treatment to suppress symptoms and live a normal life is possible with consistent use of medicine. If left untreated, it can lead to infertility, miscarriages, heart disease or failure, and infection. Worst case scenario the patient may end up in a Myxedema coma which happens when the thyroid levels get far too low. This condition is very rare but can happen as a reaction to different medicines with a patient that has untreated hypothyroidism. It can also occur due to exposure to cold temperatures, infections, and sickness. It is entirely necessary that a patient gets treatment in a hospital immediately. The signs to look out for with myxedema coma are, decreased breathing, decreased temperature below normal ranges, decreased blood pressure and sugar, unresponsiveness, and out of character mood swings. The treatments for myxedema coma can include a ventilator, intensive care, and replacement of fluids. The best thing to do is to catch any symptoms early on, and see the doctor right away to get a jumpstart on treating the hypothyroidism or whatever else is causing the symptoms.
