People Make sure you address fully what you observed and NOTE if something was not found within your community area. ● Race and Ethnicity The racial distribution is approximately 40% Hispanic and 55% white and 5% other. 51% of the population is female, 49% male with the
median age of 34. ● Cultural Characteristics Individual culture is not readily observed. English is the main language spoken, then Spanish. All signage is in English. Many homes are decorated for traditional holidays such as Halloween, Christmas and Easter. ● Lifestyle Healthy Behaviors Residents are observed jogging, walking and biking. Majority of bicyclist were observed wearing helmets. Families were noted to actively be playing in community park, with older individuals utilizing the walking path. Seatbelt use was noted in majority of drivers and passengers. Trash and recycle bins are provided by the city and are picked up on Friday of each week. ● Lifestyle Risk Behaviors Un-helmeted motorcyclists, teenage kids skateboarding without helmets down street with steep incline. History of smoking and drug use by teenagers at skate park. There were no unaccompanied children playing outside. There were no homeless people seen. Most people observed were families with young children, teenagers and the ethnicity was a mix of white and Hispanic. ● Poverty Indications No visible signs of homelessness or pan handlers. Services in the Community Make sure you address fully what you observed and NOTE if something was not found within your community area, how far away it is and how people will access it. ● Social Services Paradise Hills Community Center is approx. 4 miles away. There is a neighborhood skate park, and community park. ● Health Services There is a hospital located in the community, approx. 0.5 miles away and a second 5 miles away. New Mexico’s only Level 1 Trauma hospital is 10 miles away. There are multiple doctor’s offices, a retirement home, dentist offices, massage therapists and an
acupuncturist all within approx. 5 miles. Several mental health providers, such as licensed professional social workers have offices in the area. ● Fire and Police Services There is a new police substation and fire station approx. 1 mile away. ● Educational Resources The closes public library is 6 miles away. There is an elementary school and high school in the neighborhood. The middle school is approx. 7 miles away, bus transportation is provided. There is a local community college campus approx. 5 miles away with the state University approx. 10 miles away. Students that graduate a New Mexico high school are eligible for the state Lottery Scholarship which pays for the majority of their college. ● Religions There is a Church for Latter Day Saints in the neighborhood. There are several Catholic and non-denominational churches nearby. Some of the churches have youth groups, preschool and community cleanup projects.
