Modern There are two different kinds of theodolites: digital and non digital. Non digital theodolites are rarely used anymore. Digital theodolites consist of a telescope that is mounted on a base, as well as an electronic readout screen that is used to display horizontal and vertical angles. Digital theodolites are convenient because the digital readouts take the place of traditional graduated circles and this creates more accurate readings. total station instruments have the EDM built into an electronic theodolite. These instruments are capable of measuring and displaying all direct and indirect measurements in real-time. Figure shows a total station instrument. Note the keyboard that controls the internal processor for a large number of survey applications including standard survey data collection, stakeout, and direct coordinate reading. Also, note the cable that feeds data output directly to an electronic data recorder. Some have on-board data to rage while others require an optional data collector.

Setting up your level 1) Find a location near the spot we want to measure. 2) Set the tripod near the spot that we want to measure.

Place the tripod on a flat or clear ground near the spot we want to measure. Then, loosen the latches on the tripod’s legs and extend each leg out. Adjust the legs until the tripod is completely level, then tighten each latch. 3) Connect the device to the tripod. Screw the total station onto the tripod’s base plate, then connect the base plate to the main total station.
