with all the characters in the drawing doing certain actions that Ovid had said they were doing. There are several paintings in which Callisto is seen in the process of being stripped by Diana’s handmaids and seemingly shunned by Diana, which is a part of the Ovidian account of Callisto. So it seems that several of the artists used Ovid’s version as inspiration, which is evident in the way the interaction and relationships between the characters in the story are depicted. Just the general depiction of Callisto trying to hide her shame in front of Diana, who maintains distance in the pictures and although in some, seems to be almost sympathetic towards Callisto, nevertheless maintains her distance and leaves Callisto to fend for herself. Along with the abundance of pictures of Callisto being found out and shunned by Diana, there were a good number of pictures of Jupiter as he seduced, and raped Callisto. Each painting was done differently, but it is interesting to note the fact that the cherubim or cupids are in some of the paintings where Jupiter and Callisto are together. Another interesting thing to note is that in some of the paintings, the body language of Callisto and Jupiter does not seem to show that Callisto was forcibly taken advantage of as Ovid had described it, but almost seemed to invite Jupiter to her. This kind of interpretation can be seen in Spiernicks’ painting where Callisto embraces Jupiter, and Boucher’s painting in which Callisto lies in Jupiter’s embrace while he is disguised as Diana. There are also notable differences in the artists’ interpretation of Jupiter’s seduction of Callisto. Perhaps the artists wanted to depict the relationship between Jupiter and Callisto to be something less abrupt and not as violating towards Callisto. So there are definite influences from Ovid’s hybrid version of the story of Callisto, but there are also certain liberties that artists seem to take for the sake of artistic aesthetics, or just to lessen the controversial elements of rape and deceit on Jupiter’s part.
