Racism was built in immigration policy o Wasn’t anymore immigration policy for almost 100 years Chinese Exclusion Act Prohibited the immigration of Chinese laborers for 10 years, 10 later it was renewed, 10 after that it became permanent Barred ALL Chinese immigrants from becoming a naturalized citizen (basically took away their political power and makes it easier to criminalize them) o First law to explicitly restrict a group of immigrants because of their race and class Significance of the law o Introduced a "gatekeeping" ideology ; introduces the idea that there are certain groups that need to be kept out Racialization of Chinese permanently "alien, threatening, and inferior"
