well as the physiology of it. Personally, I was able to better understand the contractions between the atriums and the ventricles by seeing them up close as well as the pathway the blood takes to provide our body with oxygen and nutrients. I found it very interesting how similar the sheep heart is to the human heart. Learning that the sheep heart is only 1.5 times smaller than our heart is incredible. I also learned one major difference between our heart and the sheep heart is where the great vessels join the heart. In a sheep the inferior vena cava has a posterior connection to the heart while our heart has an inferior connection. Another observation I made is that the chordae tendineae are somewhat smaller and harder to find than in a human heart. While there are very few differences there are quite a few similarities such as the four chambers, all of the valves as well as the path blood flows. Blood flow through the heart starts when the right atrium takes said blood that flows through either the superior or inferior vena cava. After that the right atrium begins to fill with blood. The pressure from the blood filling up the right atrium causes the tricuspid valve to open. The blood then travels to the right ventricle where it dispenses the blood into the pulmonary arteries. The pulmonary arteries lead the blood to the lungs where it is then oxygenated. After the blood is oxygenated it flows from the lungs to the left atrium through the pulmonary veins. Then because of the build up of blood in the left atrium the mitral valve begins to open up allowing for the blood to travel into the left ventricle.
Sheep Heart Dissection Luczkowski 7 The left ventricle finally contracts pushing the blood through the aorta and out to the rest of the body. Overall, I learned a lot from this lab. I dissected a fetal pig in high school and studied the pig heart for a couple days, but I did not have the opportunity or knowledge to examine it in as much depth as I did with the sheep. Having visuals makes learning that much more enjoyable and provides a real life example.
