Degrees of union success is topsy-turvy. Long-lasting labor reforms don’t happen until the 1920s and 1930s, but were a response to this. In response to the immigrant encalves, Jane Adams creates the Settlement House Movement : the best and worst of progressive America. o She offered daycare, soup kitchens, rudimentary education, but also only offered American food, American English. o She didn’t promote ethnic identity; thought American culture was the best for these immigrant populations. Thought American ideals were the best. This arrogance led to the Movement’s downfall at the end of the 20 th century. o Also called Island Communities . o The YMCA, Red Cross, Salvation Army, were left to care for the unemployed, empovershed. Part of the larger problem of welfare capitalism . Organizations tried to fulfil a supportive role in society when federal government was not helping. Woman’s Christian Temperance Union The mentality: One problem that one group caused was at the root of all problems. So rampant, poverty, “sexual deviance,” prostitution was thought to have the one root cause: alcohol . o Thought they would create a better world. o People who thought this were impossible to talk to because they viewed themselves as being on a Crusade; were amazingly successful. 18 th Constitution: Prohibition Amendment. Led to Al Capone, Joe Kennedy and Bootlegging. Turned Chicago into the murder capital of the world. o Economic Reform
18 American has conservative socialism Party never really concerned the authorities; likened them in the same camp as a 3 rd philosophy – anarchism o Anarchism was an ill-defined socio-political philosophy that disliked big government, organized religion, laz e faire capitalism; likes a utopian idea of a society that operated according to communal will among workers. o Could never answer basic questions: How do I buy milk? How will I feed my kids? Extraordinarily naïve that was aspired to by thousands who want to take the man down. o Many ended up resorting to violence; acts of domestic terrorism that were horrific. Responsible for mailing bombs to officials, high and low. Some of them were caught, some weren’t. Many innocents died. 1901: A young man loosely tied to this assassinated President McKeinley. 1914: Black Hand Serbian group, but loosely associated, murdered Frans Ferdinan: WWI. Led to a feeling of powerlessness that led to acts of terrorism. o Deals with a sense of powerlessness against the general establishment; it was their expression of frustration. There’s no pragmatism. Any philosophy that has social change must have rationalism in order to change. This was all emotionally-based, which leads to no more frustration.
