Expectancy effect researchers unintentionally behave

This preview shows page 3 - 4 out of 5 pages.

Expectancy Effect: RESEARCHERS unintentionally behave in a manner that alters the experiments results to align with the hypothesis. ROBERT ROSENTHAL - he experimented with teacher bias on student performance. Kids who were randomly selected to be “bloomers” and intellectual became smarter over a few months when teachers were notified of their giftedness, and reacted with a bias to the students. Self Fulfilling Prophecy These are subconscious cues ex. Smiling less to the control group and eliciting a sullen tone. Eliminate expectancy effect with a DOUBLE BLIND procedure, where researchers nor participants know who is in the treatment or placebo control group. Confounding Variable : a variable that is potentially responsible for results BUT it is not the independent variable. Experimental Control: Make sure that the participant’s experience is the same for individuals in the control and treatment group. Identical experience except for the IV that is presented or void. Important Issues in Research Generalizability: Can the results of an experiment apply to other situations? Look at the sample that was studied; can ppl outside that group find similarities in this?

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
