family Shelia Stanley was born being the first of bruce’s 5 siblings. After the third grade the Stanley family moved to the Brownsville area of Brooklyn. Where Bruce then attend P.S 156. He remembers being in the school yard at 9 years old when President Kennedy was assassinated. Growing up in New York City housing and on public assistance was embarrising for young Stanley. He remembers having to go stand in line and wait for the government assistance every Saturday morning before being able to play with friends. He decribes himself as a good student in grade school always making A’s and B’s. 6 th grade was the first year that Junior highschool was created in NYC. My dad first learned to play the tuba in his junior high school band. He played so well that he made all city band in the 8 th grade. For high school he went to Canarsie High were he

recalls only 10% of the student population being African American. He was apart of a program in school which allowed him to work part time and go to school part time just as long as he maintained a grade point average of a 75%. From late Junior high school through early high school bruce lived with his grandmother to “keep her company” but it was really to be closer to the new friends he had made in Brownsville. Going to school in Canarsie left bruce missing out on his friend everyday shananegains. So bruce often found himself cutting school to hang out with his friends at their local pigeon coop. Caring for and flying homing bird is still to the day his favorite past time, sos much so he was able to make a business out of it; “Stan the Love Dove Man”.But this new past time became a problem when he was no longer going to school and just meeting the working part of his high school requirements. As time went on he went to school less and less and because of his truancy he was expelled from Canarsie High School early in his junior year.
