Meno asserts that he was never taught geometry. The Doctrine of Recollection Socrates reasons that if the slave boy did not acquire the knowledge in this life, he must “have had and learned it at some other time.” (p. 41)

He must have learned these things at some time “when he was not a man.” (p. 41) Question Meno agrees.  Do you? Do you agree with the claim that either he acquired the knowledge either in this life or he must have had and learned it at some other time when he was not a man? Question? Is this a false dichotomy? Is this a false set of alternatives? Socrates seems to claim that this is an exhaustive dichotomy (presents all of the alternatives) Is this an exhaustive dichotomy? The Afterlife Socrates seems to find support here for an assertion of the immortality of the soul. The Afterlife “Soc.  And if the truth of all things always existed in the soul, then the soul is immortal … Men.  I feel, somehow, that I like what you are saying.” (p. 41)  Question Do you agree? Could these ideas, instead, simply be innate? Descartes: Clear and distinct ideas (mathematical ideas are the prime example) are impressed by God on our ideas at birth. Uncertainty But Socrates remains uncertain. Uncertainty Soc.  And I, Meno, like what I am saying. Some things I have said of which I am not altogether confident. But that we shall be better and braver and less helpless if we think that we ought to enquire, than we should have been if we indulged in the idle fancy that there was no knowing and no use in seeking to know what we do not know;-that is a theme upon which I am ready to fight, in word and deed, to the utmost of my power.  Men.  There again, Socrates, your words seem to me excellent.  Issues and Questions Empiricism / Rationalism A priori / a posteriori Innate / taught How do we learn? The afterlife? The soul? Republic

Republic, Bk. VI: The Sun, The Divided Line  Republic, Book VII: The Cave Republic What is justice? The just state. The just person. Socrates begins with justice in the state, and then moves to justice in the individual person or soul. The ideal city: the  Kallipolis The Philosopher King  Republic  V 473d “Until philosophers rule as kings in cities or those who are now called kings and leading men genuinely and adequately philosophize, that is, until political power and philosophy coincide … cities will have no rest from evils … nor, I think, will the human race.” Stephanus Pagination a way of referring to the works of Plato  This system of pagination is based on an edition of Plato by Henricus Stephanus.
