Diversity of products and services.
When the company was established in 1931 the
sole focus was on selling auto insurance policies (Allstate, 2016). This niche market provide
opportunity that was exploited and resulted in growth.
The history of the company encompasses
several occurrences in which the leadership decided to expand the product line to enter new
niches of the insurance industry. As a result, the Allstate Insurance Corporation now sells a
variety of insurance products and services that are intended to offer protection from financial loss
in the event of an unplanned incident as well as financial products including asset management
and accumulation services.
Such a diverse product line of products and services provides Allstate Insurance
Corporation with a competitive advantage.
If government regulation or policies, stakeholders’
initiatives or some other unexpected factors negatively affect the revenue of one or two product
lines, the diversification acts as a mitigating factor to avoid a catastrophic result.
In addition, the
existence of various products and services serve to generate multiple revenue streams because of
the opportunity to offer a desirable product of service to various customers.
The multiple opportunities to engage customers and maintain a lasting relationship
provides the added benefit of the convenience of having a single provider for his or her needs.
For example, a customer who maintains relationship with the firm because of auto insurance, at
some point the customer might want to expand the relationship to include other products or
services offered.
Therefore, offering a diverse line of products and services is a strength of the
organization.
