Who are the Chernobyl children? As stated by the BBC news online environment correspondent Alex Kirby, the Chernobyl children were conceived and born after the 1986 disaster to parent who had cleaned up after the reactor. The clean-up teams sent in after the reactor exploded were called liquidators. Liquidators were presumed to have the highest levels ofexposure to the toxic radiation and chemicals. Scientist desired to know the factors that may be linked to DNA changes in Chernobyl children. The main purpose of these scientific studies was to examine these specific children’s DNA for the presence of mutations. In one such study the scientist examined siblings born to Chernobyl liquidators prior to their exposure in 1986. They

utilized these siblings as their control group. Another one of the controls in this specific study included children from families who were not exposed in the Chernobyl incident. Upon comparing these control groups to Chernobyl children scientist discovered an unexpected increase in number of new bands or mutations. Moreover, the scientist discerned other factors which could contribute to these mutations. One such factor was the amount of time that had passed from the time the liquidators were exposed and the conception of the Chernobyl child. The second factor was the amount of exposure of the liquidator. If the liquidator worked at the contaminated area for a short period of time the risk of mutations was lessened.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.
