Chapter 11Pony had to stay in bed for the rest of the week after that. One day he was looking through one of Soda’sold yearbooks and saw a picture of Bob. Bob’s grin reminded Pony of Soda’s. Pony started to think about what Bob had been like. Remembering the conversations he had with Cherry and Randy and looking at Bob’s picture, Pony determined that Bob had been a reckless, hot-tempered boy, who was cocky and scared at the same time. Darry told Pony that Randy has come to the house to talk to him (Pony). Randy told him that he was worried about being associated with violence. Pony and Randy discussed about the hearing that was coming up the next day. Pony, in his delirious mind, believed that he had killed Bob and that Jonny did not die. Darry told Randy to leave and told Pony to stop smoking in bed.
Chapter 12During the hearing, Pony didn’t have to answer too many questions because the doctor was there and had a long talk with the judge before the hearing about Pony’s condition. The judge just asked Pony a few questions about how he liked living with Darry, if he liked school, what kind of grades he made, and stuff like that. Then the judge said Pony was acquitted and the whole case was closed. After the hearing, things didn’t go back to normal for Pony. He lost his coordination, appetite, kept losing things and continued to fight with Darry. Pony’s grades had dropped in school too. His English teacher told him that even though he’s failing, if he came up with a good semester theme, he’d pass him with a C grade. The next day at lunch, Pony went with Two-Bit and Steve to get some candy and coke. Three Socs hopped outof their vehicle to get Pony for what had happened to Bob. Pony busted off the end of his coke bottle, held the head of the bottle, and threatened the Socs with it. The Socs hopped in their car and drove away. Two-Bit and Steve were worried about Pony becoming like Dally and told him not to try to be tough like the rest of the gang. They were relieved when Pony picked up the glass so nobody would get a flat tire. That night, when Pony and Darry were fighting about grades, Sodapop ran out of the house. Darry explained to Pony that Soda wasn’t Sandy’s baby’s father and was surprised that Soda hadn’t told him. Pony and Darry ran after Soda. Pony headed through the trees and cut him off half across the park and caught him in a flying tackle. Soda told Pony and Darry to stop fighting with each other because it is tearing him apart. The two of them promise to try. They raced back to the house and all three tied. At home, Pony looked at Jonny’s copy of Gone with the Wind. He found a note from Jonny in it that told him to stay gold and that it was worth saving those children. He also told him to tell Dally that the kids were worth saving, he should look at a sunset sometime, and that there’s a lot of good in the world. Pony was disappointed that he couldn’t tell Dally but then realized that he probably wouldn’t have listened anyway. Pony then wanted to write his story so that other people could learn the same lesson he had learned; to enjoy the beauty in life and to let go of their anger. He began to write his English autobiography, which turns out to be the novel “The Outsiders”, the one I’m writing about right now.
